Movies in the Park: Mr. Holland's Opus

clock July 20, 2009 16:13 by author Artown

Mr. Holland’s Opus, July 24, 9 p.m., Wingfield Park, FREE

Listen to Tim Jones‘ film introduction.

Mr. Holland’s Opus is a heartwarming tribute to those who teach music in our schools. After feeling his life has been a failure, a talented music instructor (Richard Dreyfuss), who dreamed of being a composer, learns the true measure of a man’s success through the students he has inspired for 30 years. Olympia Dukakis co-stars.    “…a big movie…Mr. Dreyfuss gives a warm and really touching performance.”—New York Times.  Rated PG. Run-time 143 minutes. Dress warmly and bring a blanket.  Movies in the park is sponsored by University of Phoenix and Goldcorp, Inc.

Students in Carson City’s Strings in the Schools program received funding in fall 2007 through the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, providing 24 half-size violins for students in grades 2 – 7.  Many of the students that benefitted from the program are still practicing today.  In 2006 Acoustic Wolves Guitar Group in Fernley, Nevada also received a grant. The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation provides grants in the form of instrument donations to underserved  K-12 schools, community and after-school programs as well as individual students who are financially limited and unable to afford an instrument.  Schools and students can apply for a grant online by going to their web site, www.mhopus.org.
