Guitarist Ottmar Liebert exudes what many consider the zenith of "New Flamenco" style – perfectly mixed elements of flamenco with jazz, bossa nova, and other genres. Ottmar’s fans are as far-reaching as his music - hardcore guitarists and guitar fans, instrumental music aficionados and numerous lovers of his often poignant, always inspired sound. All are ardent in their appreciation of Liebert, and collect his works fervently.

Since 1990, Liebert has released more than two dozen albums, including live releases, Christmas CDs, multiple CDs of original music, a DVD and remixes. His 1990 debut album, “Nouveau Flamenco” went double-platinum and has become one of the best-selling guitar albums. His latest release, “The Scent of Light,” has continued the run of success.

Born in Cologne, Germany to a Chinese-German father and Hungarian mother, Liebert has always been a creative thinker and doer. He traveled extensively through Europe and Asia intent on fully absorbing each musical tradition he encountered. After pursuing his rock and roll dreams first in his native Germany and then in Boston, he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. By 1989, he had founded the first incarnation of his band Luna Negra. The ground-breaking album “Nouveau Flamenco” began life as a self-produced local release called “Marita: Shadows and Storms,” copies of which local artist Frank Howell distributed in his art galleries. When the record found its way to radio stations and began generating a buzz among programmers and an unprecedented response among listeners, Higher Octave Music picked it up and released a re-mastered version. After his subsequent album Borrasca quickly climbed the charts in 1991, Liebert was picked up by a major label, Epic.

With his exotic good looks and enigmatic stage presence, Liebert has brought flamenco to mainstream America with a certain level of class and accessibility. His prowess as a composer and instrumentalist has steadily peaked over the years.

The Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum selling artist Liebert performs with his band Luna Negra at 8 p.m. July 18 in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget. Tickets are just $32 and are available by calling 800.648.1177 or online. Dinner and show packages are available.
